The NFC Key That Physically Fights Your AI Habit

Hank Green — YouTuber, science communicator, one of the more thoughtful people on the internet — published something this week that caught a lot of people off guard. He said, and I'm quoting directly: "the level of dopamine that I've been getting from interacting with LLMs is not healthy for me or good for the world." This is a person who understands technology, uses it professionally, and still sat down to write what was essentially an apology for the way he'd been using AI.
That's not a fringe experience. That's a pattern. And it raises a genuinely awkward question for anyone trying to use AI tools well at work: how do you stay in charge of the tool, rather than the other way round?
The answer floating around this week is remarkably analogue. It's a small NFC chip — the same technology that lets you tap your phone to pay for a coffee — but configured as a physical key you have to scan to unlock specific apps. You attach it to something you don't always have on you: a keyring in your bag, a hook by the door, a small tile on your desk. To open the app, you physically have to go and get the key. The friction is the point.
Now. This sounds almost comically low-tech for a podcast about artificial intelligence. And it is. But that's exactly why it's worth your Sunday morning.
Here's how it actually works. You buy an NFC tag — they're a few pounds or dollars each, sold in multipacks online, or as a standalone gadget (there's a branded version called Keystroke Key that's got some attention, but any programmable NFC tag does the same job). You write a shortcut to it. On iPhone, you can use the Shortcuts app to trigger an app unlock, a screen time bypass code request, or a focus mode change. On Android, there are several NFC-based automation apps that do the same. You place the physical tag somewhere with just enough distance to create a moment of pause — not a wall, not another room, just enough that getting there requires a conscious decision.
Then you map your most reflexive AI app to it. Whatever the one is that you open before you've finished forming the thought. For a lot of people right now, that's ChatGPT or Claude. For some it's a voice assistant. The app doesn't go away. The shortcut just requires you to physically stand up to use it.
Let me make that concrete. Say you're writing a report. You've been at it twenty minutes. You hit a tricky sentence and your hand moves automatically toward your phone to ask ChatGPT to smooth it out — before you've actually tried. With the NFC key on your desk in its little tray, you have to pick it up and tap the chip. That's four seconds. That's enough for the question "do I actually need this, or am I just dodging the hard bit?" to surface.
Most of the time, you'll still tap it. But occasionally you'll think: no, I've got this, and you'll put it down. And that's the whole point.
The research behind why this works is straightforward. Habit loops run on minimal friction. The reason we reach for AI — or social media, or anything else — is not usually because we've decided to. It's because the path of least resistance led us there. Adding a tiny physical step breaks the automatic part of the loop without removing the option entirely. You're not punishing yourself. You're just introducing a speed bump between stimulus and response.
Hank Green's admission this week was interesting precisely because he wasn't saying AI is bad, or that he's quitting. He was saying the pattern of use had become automatic in a way that felt out of his control. That's a very specific and familiar thing. And it's the thing the NFC key addresses — not the tool, but the unconscious reach for it.
There was a piece in Beautiful Thinking a few months back that put it well: AI succeeds at the speed of behaviour change, not at the speed of capability release. The implication being that if the behaviour change is happening to you rather than by you, you're not really adopting the tool — the tool is adopting you.
That's where the honest limitation of this technique sits. An NFC key is useful for reflexive, habitual AI use — the reaching for it before you've thought. It's less useful if your AI overuse is deliberate and scheduled, in which case you probably don't need a physical nudge, you need a policy. And if the app you're trying to moderate is browser-based rather than native, the setup gets fiddlier — most NFC automation tools work best with apps, not URLs.
It also won't work if you put the chip directly next to your phone. The whole mechanism depends on distance being slightly inconvenient. Somewhere you have to reach for it, not somewhere it's already there.
The setup time is about fifteen minutes if you're on iPhone with Shortcuts, slightly longer if you're doing it on Android and want to configure app-specific rules rather than just a reminder notification. There are YouTube tutorials. It is not elegant. It is, though, effective.
The thing I'd actually suggest trying: don't map it to your worst habit straightaway. Map it to one AI tool you use at work for tasks you could probably do yourself, and spend a week noticing how many times you go to fetch the key and then put it back down. That number is your baseline. What you do with it is up to you.
Nine dollars and a bit of deliberate friction. Sometimes that's the whole intervention.
