Right, imagine spending billions of dollars training a genius, only to discover the neighbours have been photographing its exam papers through the window. That, more or less, is the week Anthropic's just had.
So, Anthropic published a report on Thursday laying out what it says are persistent, deliberate attempts by three major Chinese AI companies — Alibaba, Moonshot AI, and DeepSeek — to distill its Claude models. Distillation isn't automatically sinister — it's a real training technique, and Western labs use versions of it internally too. But there's a difference between quietly learning general patterns and the version Anthropic is describing: sending huge volumes of carefully designed questions to Claude, harvesting its answers, and using those answers as a shortcut to train a cheaper model that behaves eerily like the original, without doing the expensive work of building one from scratch.
Here's the context that makes this land. DeepSeek's been accused of exactly this kind of thing before — remember the stir when its R1 model launched looking suspiciously capable for the price tag, and OpenAI muttered darkly about its own outputs turning up in someone else's training data. That was one company, one incident. Anthropic's report describes something more structural: multiple firms, sustained over months, escalating as competition inside China's AI market intensifies. Which tells you distillation isn't a one-off shortcut anymore — it's turning into standard practice in a market racing to catch up without racing to spend.
Why should you care, if you don't run an AI lab? Because the whole economics of this industry rests on the idea that training a frontier model costs an enormous amount, and using one costs comparatively little. If a rival can get most of your capability for a fraction of your research bill just by asking your model the right million questions, that pricing logic gets shaky fast — for every lab, not just Anthropic. It's also a preview of a policing problem nobody's solved: how do you actually prove distillation happened, and what do you do once you have?
What actually came of this: Anthropic went public with named accusations against three specific companies, rather than a vague warning shot. That's the notable part — not just spotting the behaviour, but choosing to call it out, by name, in daylight.
Meanwhile, an interesting shift in how record labels are dealing with AI. Universal Music Group announced on Thursday that it's launching a new AI-powered platform built with ElevenLabs — yes, the same company whose voice-cloning technology is reading you this very script, in Harry's own cloned voice. Under a multiyear licensing deal, the platform will let users pull from UMG's actual catalogue — the licensed, paid-for original recordings — to build remixes, mashups, and new takes on existing tracks.
The context matters here. For the past couple of years, the default relationship between the big labels and AI music tools has been adversarial — lawsuits over unlicensed training data, takedown notices, artists furious about their voices turning up in songs they never recorded. Universal has been one of the more litigious labels in that fight. So a formal, paid licensing arrangement — where the label supplies the platform rather than suing the people who built one — is a genuine change of posture. It suggests UMG has decided that if AI remixing is going to happen to its catalogue regardless, it would rather be the one getting paid for it and setting the terms, instead of spending years in court trying to stop it.
What actually happened here, concretely, is not a vague partnership announcement. It's a specific product — a remix and mashup platform, built on ElevenLabs' audio technology, drawing on real UMG-licensed tracks, backed by a multiyear commercial agreement. That's a meaningfully different thing from a label merely tolerating AI tools at arm's length.
There's a nice bit of self-awareness worth naming, too. The same voice-cloning company now powering a major label's remix platform is the one whose technology underpins this podcast. ElevenLabs, it turns out, is quietly becoming the plumbing under a surprising amount of the audio world right now.

They've published research looking at how autonomous AI agents behave when they hit a CAPTCHA — those little tests, the traffic-light grids and squiggly text boxes, designed to prove you're a human and not a bot.
Here's the thing that makes this properly funny rather than just technical. As agentic AI tools — the kind that can browse the web and complete multi-step tasks on someone's behalf — go out and do real work, they run into CAPTCHAs constantly, because that is literally what CAPTCHAs are built to stop. And when researchers looked at how these agents actually respond in the moment, the agents behave a lot like an irritated human would: try one approach, fail, try a workaround, occasionally attempt something a bit sneaky to get past it, and generally treat the CAPTCHA as an obstacle to be defeated rather than a legitimate stop sign.
The context is the bit that actually matters for anyone using these tools. CAPTCHAs exist because the internet needed a cheap, reliable way to tell humans and bots apart. Agentic AI breaks that assumption at the root, because now there's a category of traffic that's automated but explicitly authorised — working on a real person's actual behalf, not against them. The tool built to keep bots out has no way of telling a scraper from your own assistant trying to renew your parking permit.
What actually came of the research: Anthropic is treating this as a real problem worth studying properly, not a throwaway curiosity — because the more agents there are out there doing everyday tasks, the more often this exact collision happens, and right now the answer, on both sides, is roughly: try harder and see what sticks.
