There's a version of this story that sounds like good news. Anthropic launched Opus 5 this week — cheaper than Fable 5, less restricted, and by most early accounts quite capable. More AI, lower price, fewer guardrails. Progress, presumably.
And then there's a study out in the Journal of Consumer Research, published this week, that found AI companions measurably reduce loneliness. Real people, real emotional relief, peer-reviewed. Also sounds like good news.
So why does putting those two headlines side by side feel slightly uncomfortable?
Right. Let's get into it.
Here's what happened, briefly. Anthropic's Opus 5 dropped on Thursday. It sits below Fable 5 in the model hierarchy but — and this is the interesting bit — it's reportedly better than Fable at most everyday tasks while costing noticeably less to run. Which is exactly the kind of update that sounds boring until you realise what it signals: capable AI is getting cheaper, faster, and the pace isn't slowing.
Meanwhile, over in the behavioural science corner, researchers from the Journal of Consumer Research published a proper study — not a survey, an actual study — showing that AI companion apps reduce loneliness in measurable ways. People feel less isolated when they talk to an AI. The effect is real. The paper treats this as good news, and there's a reasonable case that it is.
But the University of British Columbia also found something worth pairing with that: over time, chatting with AI companions can erode the motivation to maintain human relationships. So the same tool that relieves loneliness today may, at scale and over months, quietly hollow out the very connections people actually need.
Two findings. One tool. Both true. And that tension is basically the whole of the Saturday question.
Here's the behavioural science of what's happening.
When AI does something useful but emotionally neutral — summarising a document, flagging a typo, sorting a spreadsheet — people adopt it without much friction. It doesn't threaten anything. It's a slightly better stapler.
But the moment AI starts doing something that feels personal — holding a conversation, providing comfort, making you feel heard — something shifts. The adoption still happens. People use it. But underneath, there's a kind of psychological renegotiation going on that nobody's really named cleanly yet.
A framework worth borrowing here: researchers studying AI and work published something in Frontiers in Psychology just this month about what they're calling occupational adaptation and identity negotiation. The argument is that AI adoption isn't primarily a technical process. It's a psychological one. People aren't just asking "can I use this?" They're asking "who does this make me?"
That question is manageable when AI helps you write a report faster. It gets much more complicated when AI is the thing making you feel less alone.
And this is the thread that pulls everything together. Because it's not just companion apps. Look at what's happening at work. We already know — and this has been well-documented over the past few months — that roughly half of workers are hiding their AI use from managers because admitting it carries a social penalty. Rated as lazier, less competent, not quite doing the real work. The tool is useful, the adoption is real, but the identity cost keeps it underground.
Now extend that to something more intimate: an AI that listens to you. That remembers what you said last time. That responds with warmth and patience and perfect availability. The adoption is even more personal. The identity question is even sharper.
Because what does it say about you if an AI is better at making you feel heard than the people around you? That's not a comfortable question. And behavioural science has a fairly consistent finding about uncomfortable questions: people don't think their way through them. They feel their way through them, and then construct the rationale afterwards.
So what does this mean in practice? Three things worth sitting with — let me put them differently: three things that might actually shift how you think about this.
One. The loneliness finding isn't an edge case. As AI models get cheaper and more capable — see Opus 5 — AI companions become more accessible, more convincing, and more integrated into daily life. The scale of the UBC finding matters. Not "interesting research" scale. "Shapes how millions of people relate to each other over the next decade" scale. That deserves more serious attention than it's getting.
Two. The resistance to AI in intimate contexts isn't irrational. It often gets treated as technophobia or sentimentality. But it may be load-bearing. The discomfort people feel when AI blurs into emotional territory might be a reasonable instinct, not a bias to be corrected. A Beautiful Thinking essay put it well: AI succeeds at the speed of behaviour change — not at the speed of model releases. The gap between what AI can do and what people actually change is almost entirely psychological. And that gap exists for a reason.
Three. The identity question is going to get harder before it gets easier. Right now we're mostly debating AI in productivity contexts. But productivity is the easy version of the conversation. The hard version is AI in emotional contexts, relational contexts, the parts of life that define how people see themselves. When the question shifts from "did you use AI to write that?" to "did you use AI to feel better about yourself?" — the stakes of the disclosure dilemma are completely different.
Nobody has a clean answer to that yet. But the research is starting to catch up with the reality. And the reality is that AI companions are already in use, at scale, and the psychological effects are only just becoming legible.
Which leaves us with what might be the most useful question of the week — not "should AI replace human connection?" That one's too big and too loud. The more interesting question is: what exactly is it that human connection is supposed to be for that AI can't provide? And is that thing we're protecting actually there, or have we just assumed it was?
